Overview
Founded during the Tang Dynasty, Songpan was an important military outpost on the ancient Tea Horse Road. The old town walls, built during the Ming Dynasty, still stand today and encircle a charming mix of Tibetan, Qiang, and Han Chinese cultures.
Getting There
Songpan is accessible by bus from Chengdu (about 6-7 hours) or by flying to Jiuhuang Airport and taking a bus (about 1 hour). Many travelers stop in Songpan en route to Jiuzhaigou.
Attractions
Songpan Ancient Town: Walk along the Ming Dynasty city walls, explore the old streets, and visit the ancient gates.
Mounigou Valley: A lesser-known but beautiful valley with waterfalls, lakes, and hot springs, located about 30km from Songpan.
