Tibet Travel Guide

Tibet, known as the Roof of the World, is a land of breathtaking high-altitude landscapes, ancient monasteries, and rich Buddhist culture. This guide covers everything you need to plan your Tibet journey.

Tibet Travel Permits

All foreign travelers need a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) in addition to a Chinese visa. Permits must be arranged through a licensed travel agency at least 15-20 days before travel. Individual travel is not permitted; you must join an organized tour.

Best Time to Visit

April to October is the best time to visit Tibet. July and August are peak season with warm weather but more crowds. Shoulder seasons (April-May, September-October) offer fewer tourists and clear skies.

Top Attractions

Potala Palace: The iconic former winter residence of the Dalai Lama in Lhasa, with over 1,000 rooms.

Jokhang Temple: The spiritual heart of Tibet, housing the most revered Buddha statue.

Mt. Everest Base Camp: Drive to the north side of the world's highest peak for spectacular views.

Lake Namtso: One of Tibet's three holy lakes, at 4,718m above sea level.

Altitude Sickness

Lhasa sits at 3,656m. Allow 1-2 days for acclimatization upon arrival. Drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activity, and consider taking altitude sickness medication.
